Sri Lanka Association Berlin e.V.’s continued relief efforts for people in need in Sri Lanka
Although the COVID19 pandemic has not hit Sri Lanka as hard as its neighboring countries, the loss of
jobs and incomes incurred due to the pandemic has still been severe in the country. While workers in
almost every sector have been affected, it is largely informal workers and day laborers who are most
affected. Experts predict poverty levels to rise to 13 percent soon, up from 8.9 percent in 2019.
As the Sri Lanka Association Berlin e.V., we believe that the economic burden induced by the pandemic
is not borne evenly and that it is critical and our duty to protect the poorest and the most vulnerable from
falling into greater hardships. For these reasons, we continue to distribute food dry rations on a monthly basis to people in need in the
areas of Kukulkatuwa,Nehinna and Palolpitiya.
In February, we further gifted school bags and water bottles to children starting school in grade 1 in Palopitiya.
And because we are convinced that the only way to sustainably handle this crisis is to invest in people and their futures, we have signed an
agreement with relevant Sri Lankan authorities to construct a new building at the Palopitiya Maha Vidyalaya to ensure that school children in the area have the necessary infrastructure for their education. For more information on this project, feel free to contact us via info@srilankans-berlin.de.

Obwohl die COVID19-Pandemie Sri Lanka nicht so hart getroffen hat wie seine Nachbarländer, sind die
Arbeitsplatz- und Einkommensverluste, die durch die Pandemie entstanden sind, im Land dennoch
gravierend. Während Arbeiter*innen in fast jedem Sektor von der Corona-Pandemie betroffen sind, sind
es vor allem informelle Arbeiter*innen und Tagelöhner*innen, die am meisten betroffen sind. Experten
gehen davon aus, dass die Armutsrate von 8,9 Prozent im Jahr 2019 bald auf 13 Prozent steigen wird.
Als Sri Lanka Association Berlin e.V. sind wir der Meinung, dass die wirtschaftliche Belastung durch die
Pandemie nicht gleichmäßig verteilt ist, und dass es unsere Pflicht ist, die Ärmsten und Schwächsten
unter uns vor größerer Not zu schützen.
Deshalb verteilen wir weiterhin monatlich Lebensmittel-Trockenrationen an Bedürftige in den Gebieten
Kukulkatuwa, Nehinna und Palolpitiya. Im Februar haben wir außerdem Schultaschen und
Wasserflaschen an Kinder verschenkt, die in Palopitiya in die erste Klasse eingeschult werden.
Und weil wir davon überzeugt sind, dass der einzige Weg zur nachhaltigen Bewältigung dieser Krise darin besteht,
in Menschen und ihre Zukunft zu investieren, haben wir mit den zuständigen Behörden in Sri Lanka einen Vertrag zum Bau
eines neuen Gebäudes am Palopitiya Maha Vidyalaya (Schule in Palopitiya) unterzeichnet. So wollen wir sicherstellen, dass
